Online Therapy to Help Insomnia

It is estimated that around 1 in 3 people suffer from some form of insomnia. People with anxiety and depression, women, and those who work irregular shifts are at a higher risk of suffering from insomnia. There are many ways to attempt to treat insomnia, through pills, holistic remedies, and even alcohol, but for many these treatments cannot help their severe insomnia. A new study shows that online therapy that utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) can help ease the disorder for some people.

What is insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder that either makes it hard for the person affected to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night (sometimes an insomniac has issues with both). This issue can lead to you feeling tired throughout the day and impacting your performance professionally, academically, and socially. There are many causes of insomnia, particularly anxiety and depression, or the result of some sort of medication. It can also be inherited from your parents.

About the study

According to the results of the study, those who participated had an easier time falling asleep and continued to see improved results after the study ended. This type of therapy, CBT-I, is considered the best way to treat chronic insomnia. Instead of finding temporary solutions, this kind of therapy focuses on helping people think differently about their sleeping problems and works on treating the issues and behaviors that have developed because of insomnia. Part of the therapy involved the therapy group completing a six-week course online, where they read and completed homework assignments, including keeping a sleeping journal. The control group was merely given access to a website to read about insomnia. After six weeks, the therapy group saw improvement in their sleeping patterns. Over 70 percent of the people in the therapy group responded positively to the therapy methods.

What else needs to be done?

While there are millions of people who suffer from insomnia, there’s a lack of people trained in CBT-I therapy. A place to start helping those with insomnia is training more therapists in CBT-I techniques and making these readily available. This online therapy program is a start, because if future studies continue to show the effectiveness of online therapy, it can be widely available to people with an internet connection and prevents the need to travel to a physical office to speak with a professional and attend sessions.
